Mentor a DBA Scholar. One lunch a week can change a kid's year.
Volunteer requirements
Minimum age
18 years old.
Hours
A minimum of 37 hours of service: at least 1 hour per week during the school year (not required over holiday and spring breaks). Each week, volunteers send a quick mentee update email to the DBA Youth Foundation after their lunch meeting.
Processing
All prospective volunteers complete a volunteer application with two personal references (non-relatives) and a background check. Applicants are considered based on demonstrated commitment and the availability of volunteer positions.
Orientation and training
Once checks are complete, volunteers attend the required orientation and meet their mentee on a Sunday night before the school year starts. Orientation is repeated annually to stay active.
Attendance
Volunteers are expected to keep their scheduled lunch hours and notify the foundation of absences in advance. After 3 consecutive unexcused absences the foundation may end the placement. Volunteers must sign in at the school each visit, or hours are not recorded.
Evaluation
A competency assessment is done after the 2nd nine weeks and again at the end of the school year.
